Livestock Water Recycling (LWR) is the world's leading provider of livestock water treatment technology.**Their innovative technology uses a combination of mechanical and chemical treatments to remove**contaminants and separate fertilizer nutrients from manure water. The result is segregated fertilizer nutrients**and clean water that can be reused. Key to their technology is the use of a flocculant which helps separate the**inorganic and organic material from the manure water. The current LWR system utilizes synthetic, cationic**polyacrylamide (cPAM) as a flocculant. Although this flocculant is effective it degrades slowly and does not**meet organic certification standards. The focus of this application is to examine two natural polysaccharides,**chitosan and starch, both modified and unmodified as replacements for cPAM for flocculation of manure**water. Natural flocculants degrade faster than PAM. Moreover, the solid fraction separated using natural**flocculants would meet organic certification standards as it would be considered an organic fertilizer.
