This application is for funds to purchase a lyophilizer, also known as a freeze-dryer. This instrument will be used by the research groups of Dr. Scott Taylor, Dr. John Honek and Dr. Elizabeth Meiering in the Dept. of Chemistry at the University of Waterloo. Lyophilization, also known as freeze-drying, is a very important technique used for concentrating and purifying biological compounds such as nucleotides, carbohydrates, proteins and peptides. It removes volatile impurities, such as volatile salts, by a process known as sublimation. The Taylor, Honek and Meiring research groups rely on this technique to purify many of their biomolecules. The ultimate goals of their research is to elucidate the underlying causes of diseases such as Alheimer's disease, cancer and diabetes and to develop therapeutics for treating these diseases. The requested lyophilizer will be crucial in enabling them to achieve these goals.
