The epithelium is the most frequently encountered tissue in the human body and a central component of most organs. Defects in epithelial cells are the root cause of many diseases including more than 80% of all forms of cancer. All epithelial tissues share a polarized cell structure that is critical for their formation and function. Dr. Tepass investigates the mechanisms that regulate the formation and maintenance of epithelial polarity during development to better understand how growth of epithelial cells can be controlled in the context of regenerative *medicine or to prevent the progression of cancer.
