This Engage project aims at the research and development of novel grid balancing method for distribution**network integrating large-scale single-phase PV generation. The work will be conducted in collaboration with**Canadian industrial partner, Struthers Technical Solutions. The company specializes in a full range of**engineering and consulting services to mining, power generation, and industrial clients covering the technical**area of electrical power systems analysis, automation and control.**With the fast growing of renewable energy sources, such as Photovoltaic (PV) and wind generations in Canada,**one of the challenges integrating renewable energy sources is their high intermittency which causes grid**unbalance when single-phase generations are integrated into three-phase power distribution network. The**objective of this NSERC Engage Grant project is to investigate the grid voltage balancing methods using**switchable passive components such as resistor, inductor and capacitor instead of the expensive power**electronic converters. The UBC team will carry out the design and optimization of the balancing control**algorithm which will allow increased penetration of renewable energy sources and improve power grid quality**and reliability.
