This Engage project aims at the research and development of novel phasor-based voltage control and
optimization method in distribution grids integrating large-scale renewable energy sources. The work will be
conducted in collaboration with Canadian industrial partner, Enbala Power Networks. The company specializes
in the development and marketing of smart power grid technologies that provides real-time control of a wide
variety of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as energy storage, demand response, and smart inverters in
distribution grids to achieve optimized grid system operations.
With the fast growing of renewable energy sources, such as Photovoltaic (PV) and wind generations, in
Canada, one of the challenges integrating renewable energy sources is the high penetration of the renewables
on the voltage profile of the distribution grids. The objective of this NSERC Engage Grant project is to
investigate the flexible and distributed voltage control methods using novel linearized power flow algorithm
and dynamic load management technologies. The UBC team will carry out the design and optimization of real
and reactive power control scheme for distribution grids which will allow increased penetration of renewable
energy sources, improve customer power quality, and reduce system losses.
