Lithium-Ion batteries are widely used in electronic devices (such as cell phones), power storage, and**increasingly in electric vehicles. In applications requiring larger power such as vehicles, many individual**battery cells are grouped in bricks that can then be connected in series or parallel into a pack that can provide**more current at a higher voltage. Battery packs are monitored by Battery Management Systems (BMS) that**control the pack to charge and discharge safely. More advanced BMS attempt to optimize performance and/or**lifetime. Electra Motor Corporation, a Vancouver based company, has prototyped an advanced BMS with**significant computational power that will allow advanced algorithms to improve this control and optimization.**UBC Mathematician, Brian Wetton, brings expertise in modelling electrochemical systems and scientific**computing to the next generation of algorithms for the Electra BMS.
