The proposed research project includes a partnership between the Intelligent Control and Estimation (ICE) Laboratory (Dr. Gadsden) at the University of Guelph (Guelph, Ontario) and Eagle Vision Systems (Kitchener, Ontario). The primary goal of the collaborative research partnership is to develop an automated waste collection system that is safe and reliable to operate in both residential and commercial settings. This topic is important to Canada for a number of economic, societal, and political reasons. The federal government recently established a strategy on the development and use of AI in Canada. This federal strategy was developed to accomplish four main goals: to increase the number of AI researchers and skilled HQP in Canada; to establish interconnected research hubs throughout the country; to develop leadership on implications of AI to the economy, ethics, policy, and legal fields; and, to support a national AI research community. The expected outcomes and impacts include: 1) automation of curbside waste collection; 2) development of new artificial intelligence (AI) strategies; 3) knowledge transfer activities to other industries such as manufacturing; 4) reduction of curbside waste collection costs to municipalities; and, 5) training of HQP in AI, robotics, and mechatronic systems. The expected outcomes of the proposed research project will positively contribute to Canada's economy and overall goal to be a leader in AI technology.
