Masonry veneers provide reliable and durable environmental protection for the exterior walls of buildings. An integral part of the design of masonry veneer is a shelf angle, which provides structural support and is bolted or secured to a slab edge. In this way, the shelf angle links the veneer to the main body of the building, creating a convenient bridge for heat transfer. When thermal insulation is placed exterior to the main body of a building, this bridge will have to penetrate through the insulation and create a thermal bridge. Approaching new energy codes have higher and higher requirements on the effective thermal resistance of exterior walls. The compliance of veneer systems that rely on traditional support systems is not guaranteed. FERO Inc. is a local company in Edmonton that performs masonry accessories manufacturing work and technical development - FERO is interested in developing an innovative shelf angle anchoring system with superior thermal performance compared to conventional alternatives. This project aims to develop a shelf angle system that will provide sufficient structural strength and minimal thermal bridging.
