The proposed project aims to promote sustainable and healthy living in Canada by advancing the design and operation of extremely low-energy consumption homes and improve their indoor environmental qualities. Three novel cost-effective technologies, thermal energy storage using building fabric components, space and water heating using heat pump and gas furnace alternatively, and intelligent building management, as well as their integrated design and operation concepts will be developed in this project. Prefabrication technologies will also be used in the design to enable a near "plug-and-play" construction feature. This feature will significantly reduce time and cost, and ensure the quality of building construction, especially for remote areas. The developed concepts and technologies will be applied to two demonstration projects, and the actual performance will be monitored and assessed. The concepts and technologies will be transferred to the industry partners, Landmark Group of Companies Inc. and Mod Studio Inc., via the demonstration projects and other technology transfer mechanisms for further commercial exploration and development. Both companies are specialized in the prefabrication of low-energy residential buildings, and they are looking forward to broadening and improving their products through the adoption of the research findings. The project will bring significant social, economic, technological, and environmental benefits to Canadians. It will advance the research and development in building technologies for regions facing severe climatic and geographic challenges. The outcomes of the project are expected to directly reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, improve the standard of living, and enhance the resilience of homes and communities to climate change. Transferable knowledge on intelligent low-energy buildings will be available to Canada's building stock. The training from the project will equip highly qualified personnel with knowledge and skills that are in high demand by industry and academia.
