The proposed research aims at establishing a new research partnership between Dr. Alam's research team at Queen's University and Doric Lenses. The collaboration will focus on investigating the feasibility of using metasurface for improving the performance of optical lens. The failure of a lens' ability to focus light of different colors at the same point - a phenomenon known as chromatic aberration is a major limitation of conventional lenses. Currently a composition of multiple lenses is used to mitigate chromatic aberration, which are bulky, expensive and require precise alignment. Metasurface is an emerging technology which uses a combination of planar nanostructures to achieve unprecedented control on the flow of light. The aim of this project is to investigate the feasibility of using metasurface to improve the performance of lens, especially to reduce chromatic aberration. The result of the project will result in future collaboration with Doric Lenses to implement a new generation of lenses with improved performance and lower cost. It will also provide an excellent training opportunity for a PhD student at Queen's University.
