Aviation is an essential part of the twenty-first century economy, but is also a major source of noise and atmospheric pollutants. In an increasingly strict regulatory environment, design of jet aircraft relies on accurate, efficient, reliable computational aerodynamics software to assess and optimize potential designs. As part of their design process, Bombardier Aerospace simulates aircraft performance across the flight envelope, including the take-off and landing configurations of an aircraft. Especially near maximum lift, the accurate prediction of lift and drag is quite difficult and computationally expensive. The goal of this project is to demonstrate in two dimensions a new approach for efficiently characterize performance of high-lift wing configurations. Our longer-term goal is to work with Bombardier Aerospace to extend the techniques demonstrated in this project to full three-dimensional wing and aircraft configurations, enabling them to develop new and improved aircraft more quickly and efficiently.
