MDA develops and delivers advanced surveillance and intelligence solutions, defence and maritime systems, radar geospatial imagery, space robotics, satellite antennas, and communication subsystems. The objective of the proposed project is to evaluate Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes using metal for the development of a complex mechanical component for imaging systems (e.g., optical baffles, sensor housings, optical mounts, adapters) for use in harsh environments. The project addresses the need to build complex structures that cannot be machined by traditional methods, such as subtractive manufacturing, nor made cost-effectively, yet exhibit the desired performance. The project work will include redesigning the component for AM, and physically producing/printing the designs with AM technology. The Mohawk College Additive Manufacturing Innovation Centre (AMIC) has expertise in component optimization; design for AM analysis; and manufacturing 3D metal components and prototypes. A Mohawk College student will support the component design for AM, revisions for optimal performance, and production with the AM technology. The project investigations will help MDA by de-risking and demonstrating the opportunities with AM technology, and exploring an initial opportunity to produce a component with AM for end-use in harsh environments. In 2018, the Canadian aerospace industry produced $31 billion in revenue, with approximately 89,500 jobs, and its value chain contributed $20 billion in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). By supporting MDA, the project will support the investigation of new technology adoption, and innovation in the aerospace industry component production.
