The Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) Genomics Lab will use its expertise to develop quantitative polymerase chain reaction (Q-PCR) tests for Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) and Ureaplasma diversum (U. diversum) in collaboration with L'Alliance Boviteq (Boviteq). Boviteq offers reproductive and genetic solutions to North American cattle producers from its world-class In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) labs. These new genetic tools produced by the KPU Genomics Lab will enable Boviteq and their partners to effectively detect and monitor M. bovis and U. diversum in Canadian dairy and beef cattle for better reproductive success and product quality. M. bovis is the most common pathogen associated with several forms of clinical manifestations in cattle involving arthritis, pneumonia and mastitis. Critically, M. bovis are resistant to most traditional antibiotics and therefore dif?cult to treat and can spread quickly through a herd causing significant health decline and economic loss. U. diversum is a common inhabitant of the lower reproductive tract of cattle. Critically, U. diversum is associated with decreased conception rates and various maladies associated with reproductive failure. The Q-PCR tests developed by KPU experts will allow Boviteq and partners to detect M. bovis and U. diversum at early stages in their animals and allow them to deploy effective disease management strategies to reduce overall impact on animal health and economic loss. Students will benefit from the opportunity to participate in applied research and contribute to the sustainability of Canada's cattle industry. These new tools can be used immediately by Boviteq's many clients throughout North America to improve animal health and productivity.
