In this project, we propose the development of new techniques that will allow collaborators potentially separated by thousands of miles to work together using mixed reality technology in a seamless, natural way on physical tasks (such as repair or maintenance of heavy equipment like tanks and trucks), and in high pressure command and control situations. While previous research has identified many innovative demonstrations showing that mixed reality technology can save time and reduce cognitive effort for workers when put into practice, little of this work has yet been translated to commercial products, and instead has been developed in one-off prototype systems. While past work has established the strong potential of mixed reality, it has done so only in a limited set of representative tasks, and has not yet identified the general interaction patterns that can be used in a wide range of scenarios. With the recent commoditization of mixed reality technology (such as the Microsoft HoloLens), exciting new applications are now possible that can be built successfully into software products. In this project, we will assist Kognitiv Spark in building both general purpose and domain-specific interactions into their HoloLens-based Augmented Reality solution for this new form of human-to-human, computer-mediated collaboration.
