LOPES Ltd, waLtdounded in 1976 in Sudbury, Ontario as a steel fabrication shop serving the local mining industry. For over 40 years, they have completed some of the more complex fabrication jobs in Northern Ontario and across Canada. They have been providing the market with innovative solutions and quality artistry for a wide array of piping projects in the mining and industrial sector. Lopes has worked extensively with steel and ferrous alloys and is planning to expand into the Defence sector. However, these opportunities require the use of materials that are currently outside of their knowledge base.Copper-Nickel alloys are advanced corrosion-resistant used in saltwater marine applications, particularly in the cooling and fire suppression systems of Coast Guard and Navy ships and submarines. Although there are two primary grades of copper-nickel alloy used in marine service, this project is expected to focus on the weldability of alloy 90-10 Cu-Ni. This alloy provides excellent service for most applications while being less expensive. Copper-nickel alloys have a remarkable combination of good resistance to both corrosion and biofouling in seawater. These properties make them an ideal material selection for pipe systems, heat exchangers and structures engineered for marine use. Fabrication of Cu-Ni alloys requires different procedures, techniques and methodologies over traditional Iron-based alloys. The development of these systems and procedures will provide Lopes with the ability to manufacture an entirely new product line.
