Leveraging cloud computing provides a key paradigm shift in engineering the next-generation wireless cellular network. This proposal aims at developing advanced wireless access techniques exploiting emerging networking and physical-layer technologies including cloud computing, millimeter Wave (mmWave), massive multiple input multiple output (massive MIMO), small cells, virtualization for future ultra-dense heterogeneous cloud radio access networks (H-CRAN). Smart utilization of these technologies enables us to effectively leverage different degrees of freedom in the spectrum, spatial, antenna domains and the flexibility and intelligence of cloud computing to achieve significant performance benefits for the future H-CRAN.****Our long-term design objective is to propose cost-efficient and adaptive wireless access solutions that span both physical and higher layers of the protocol stack to meet the rapid growth in wireless capacity, number of wireless connections, more stringent quality-of-service (QoS) as well as energy- and cost-efficient wireless access requirements of the future wireless cellular network. Toward this end, the short-term objectives of this discovery research program are to address the following closed-related research issues: 1) Channel estimation and beamforming design for H-CRAN with mmWave massive MIMO; 2) Joint wireless access and backhaul engineering of ultra-dense H-CRAN; 3) Scalable and efficient radio resource and network management; 4) Virtualization techniques for efficient sharing of radio and cloud resources.*******This project is expected to contribute to shape the future broadband mobile wireless eco-system and to result in significant contributions and impacts in both technical and economic viewpoints. Therefore, it will help maintain the leadership role of Canada in the international landscape. In particular, the research conducted in this project will produce important wireless technologies to realize many high-speed wireless applications. In addition, the project will enable to train Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP) in the well-sought and critical wireless technology domain.*********
