英文摘要
The development of supercapacitors (SC) addresses the need in advanced energy storage devices for electric and hybrid vehicles, buses, aircrafts, trains, mining equipment, electronics, consumer products, capacitive water deionization, communication equipment and various defense applications, such as autonomous intelligent systems and security systems. SC offer advantages of high power, fast charging and long cycle life. The long-term objective of this work is the development of advanced SC for energy storage and innovative value added training of HQP. It is based on short term objectives, such as development of new charge storage materials, innovations in nanotechnology, development of advanced microstructures and device design, fundamental understanding of charge storage mechanisms, development of professional skills of HQP for Canadian industry and training new leaders in nanotechnology and energy. ***Our innovative approach and methodology will provide a basis for scientific and technological advancements in energy storage. The investigation of organic molecules with strong polydentate bonding to oxide nanoparticles will result in the development of advanced capping and dispersing agents. New electrochemically active dispersants for oxide particles and dopants for conductive polymers will be tested for SC applications. The studies of new chelating polymers and synthesis of new chelating redox polymer complexes will provide an avenue for the discovery of advanced redox active binders for SC electrodes. The agglomerate free processing of charge storage materials and significant reduction of the particle size will be achieved using novel liquid-liquid extraction techniques, advanced extractor materials and extraction mechanisms. New concepts for improved dispersion and mixing of carbon nanotubes, graphene and oxide particles include the use of novel co-dispersants for the individual components, electrostatic heterocoagulation and ion pair methods, component linkers and new techniques based on Schiff base reactions. The synthesis of new crystals, which combine properties of dispersants and reducing or oxidizing agents will open a conceptual space for advances and discoveries in the field of coated particles and template free synthesis of 1-D materials with enhanced charge storage properties.***Value-added HQP training will be focused on emerging nanotechnologies, novel charge storage systems and mechanisms, development of devices with capacitance of 200 F, energy density of 4 Wh/kg and power density of 8 kW/kg. In addition to technical skills, the HQP training will be focused on the development of soft skills. The emphasis will be placed on the development of fundamental science and new technologies, which will drive Canadian leadership in energy and nanotechnology. The proposed research program will impact automotive, energy, defense and electronic sectors.**
