Flame retardant materials (FRM) and methods of their manufacturing are vital for many sectors of Canadian manufacturing industry. FRM have many applications in various commercial products for aerospace, communication, automotive and transportation industries, customer and building products, energy storage devices and other applications. New Federal regulations banned toxic FRM, which are commonly used in various products and must be replaced by environmentally friendly materials. The collaborative work with Advanced Ceramic Corporation (ACC) will target the development and testing of advanced FRM and new commercial manufacturing methods. Our innovative approach is focused on the development and manufacturing of efficient environmentally friendly ceramic FRM and their applications in advanced insulation for black boxes of flight data recorders and coatings for aerospace industry. ACC is interested in mass scale production of new non-toxic ceramic FRM for application in products of other Canadian manufacturers. The research offers important innovations in synthesis of complex hydroxides and development of FRM with reconstruction properties. The proposed work will be based on further fundamental advances in new technologies, pioneered at McMaster University, such as colloidal processing of nanomaterials using chelating dispersants, chelating polymers and complexes, template free synthesis of fibrous nanoparticles, liquid-liquid extraction of hydroxides , solid state synthesis at ambient conditions and fluidized bed hydrolysis. The benefits of this project will include the transfer of new technology to ACC and other companies involved in the sustainable manufacturing of FRM containing products. The manufacturing of advanced FRM and new products will allow ACC to increase production, reduce the product cost and develop products for new applications. This work will allow many business advantages and enhance ACC business superiority in the field of FRM containing products. The proposed work meets the need of Canadian industry in HQP in advanced manufacturing, nanotechnology, materials science and engineering of FRM, ceramics and polymers.
