Shoulder mechanics are complex and challenging to characterize. No other human musculoskeletal mechanism combines such intricate geometry with high movement flexibility. A persistent issue is the reliable estimation of mechanical exposure data. These data are required to proactively avoid negative consequences including tissue damage such as rotator cuff pathology, adaptive movement, and muscle fatigue. Many factors influence these exposures including arm posture, hand forces, health status, bone shape, tissue tolerance and strength. Major unresolved issues surrounding tissue damage are studied in Dr. Dickersons research program, including population variability, specific muscle fatigue, and tolerance of tissues to realistic exposure conditions.
