The growing demand and pervasive deployment of wireless communications with the perspective of Internet-of-things pose the challenge of potentially trillions of devices flooding limited spectrum resources with tremendous amounts of multimedia data in dense heterogeneous wireless access networks. Due to the dynamic nature of both transmission media and multimedia traffic, re-configurable and adaptive schemes are of particular interest. Furthermore, interference is the major performance-limiting factor and interference mitigation can be more effectively done by coordination of the transmission and resource allocation between users to minimize mutual interference in a collaborative interference control manner. Cooperation between users in transmission and resource allocation can also be extended to obtain broader coverage and to mitigate channel impairments without the need to use large power at the transmitter and hence to achieve substantial gain in system throughput. Dynamic spectrum access through cognitive radios has also been considered for more efficient use of spectrum resources. It will be beneficial to explore the cross-fertilization of cooperation and cognition, which will become especially important in heterogeneous wireless networks. ***We propose a research plan to study and develop energy-efficient transmission and resource allocation techniques applicable to heterogeneous wireless access networks through the notion of cognitive cooperation in exploring multiple dimensions to increase system capacity. We plan to address several open questions with vast potential for use in a multi-node network, including bandwidth and energy-efficient transmission and relaying strategies, cooperation based on the awareness of surroundings through cognition. Furthermore, intelligent and efficient use of multiple-antenna techniques among nodes can bring benefits from the collaborative advantages in a distributed manner via massive MIMO, full-duplex operation. In particular, we will consider adaptive resource allocation strategies based on cooperative games suitable for distributed structures, which can be performed by the individual node or a small cluster of related nodes in collaboration and in cognition/consultation of relevant side information extracted from the system context and situation. The proposed approach and methodology will involve various aspects: system modeling and analysis; development of efficient transmission and resource allocation techniques; performance evaluation by analysis and simulation; implementation of proposed schemes. ***The proposed research is significant and should be undertaken to enhance Canada's competitive position in providing advanced communications systems. Our industrial contacts are a definite asset for the eventual application of this research in new operational systems.
