To meet the rapidly increasing demand for broadband wireless services over the next decade, international**standard bodies have set forth an impressive list of goals for the fifth generation (5G) of wireless systems.**Under the acronym IMT-2020, these call for multi-fold increase in data rate, user capacity per unit area, and**Quality of Service (QoS), allowing seamless connections that will bring together people and objects in a smart**networked city. To fulfill these requirements, significant technological advances are needed at all levels of the**communication model stack, but especially at the physical layer. Within this context, we propose a**cutting-edge program of research, to take place over the next three years and aimed at providing viable**engineering solutions to a critical subset of 5G challenges. Specifically, we will seek to develop and investigate**improved transmission and signal processing schemes for large-scale Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO)**systems operating under a Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN). The proposed research is articulated along**two main avenues: (1) Hybrid precoding/decoding design for large-scale MIMO; (2) Operation of massive**MIMO under C-RAN. Improvements will be sought in terms of complexity, bandwidth and power efficiency,**while performance will be characterized under conditions of operation representative of 5G networks. This**proposed research program is strongly supported by our industrial sponsor, InterDigital Canada, and has been**carefully crafted with company engineers. Under our current agreement, InterDigital will have primary access**to the new technologies developed by our team, as well as the opportunity to recruit top HQPs trained under**this project. In turns, critical feedbacks from the company will help us maintain a competitive edge and**advance our research along more challenging avenues. The proposed research is intended to help InterDigital**develop intellectual property in the area large-scale MIMO within C-RAN, foreseen as a key enabling**technology for 5G. Our collaborative work will thus create new opportunities for Canada, helping our country**to maintain its position as a global leader in the information sector.
