Our modern societies heavily depend on a sophisticated and ubiquitous Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) infrastructure underpinned by signal processing. However, present electronic bottlenecks in signal-processing circuits fundamentally compromise our capability to face the ever-increasing demand for higher capacity at a lower cost in high-speed telecommunications, information processing and computing systems. The proposed CRC program will directly address this critical and challenging problem by targeting the development of photonic signal-processing technologies that can offer the needed practical performance, in terms of optimized energy efficiency and reduced footprint, without trading their intrinsic bandwidth advantage. This research will directly contribute to overcome present electronic bottlenecks in ICTs, and it will also help in fulfilling the pressing demands for increased capacity in an environmentally friendly fashion. This is key to ensure the long-term sustainability of our ICT infrastructure, and all its associated socio-economic benefits.
