While earthquakes are a major geologic hazard, many outstanding questions remain about the mechanisms that control their occurrence, magnitude and frequency. Society and the economy are affected not only by large tectonic earthquakes, but also moderate-size events induced by human activities such as resource extraction. By integrating geophysical observations with numerical modeling, Prof. Liu's research program investigates the source mechanism of natural and anthropogenic earthquakes, focusing on processes that operate across timescales and in various types of tectonic settings. The research outcomes of this program will promote the transition from conceptual understanding towards quantitative prediction of earthquakes and hazard assessment.
