项目摘要

The proposed research program will focus on key climate warming-related landscape changes at northern high latitudes that have the potential to alter ecosystem structure, function, and feedbacks to climate. Three areas of proposed research are improved understanding of: 1) thermokarst expansion rates and permafrost-fire interactions; 2) fate of permafrost carbon and nitrogen following thaw; and 3) regional patterns of thaw sensitive terrain and carbon release. Using empirical and modeling approaches, novel advances will be made in our understanding of high latitude ecological change and in our ability to anticipate and adaptively manage for the impacts of climate change on permafrost.
