Catastrophic failures such as the De la Concorde bridge in Laval and the Morandi bridge in Genoa have highlighted the societal risk posed by infrastructure failures. They also underscore the need to inspect hard to access and hidden areas, which otherwise may go undetected and could cause catastrophic failures in the long term. Dr. Narasimhan's team will develop state-of-the-art sensor platforms and novel decision support tools to assess the state of vulnerable bridge infrastructure that otherwise would be difficult to inspect, thereby mitigating the risk of catastrophic failures.
