A new method and device for real-time detection and imaging of oversized rocks and metal pieces moving on aconveyor belt with oil sands upstream of the crusher will be developed. The design method is based on ultra wideband synthetic aperture radar principles. This technology for monitoring the content on conveyor belt provides information about the size of the rocks and metal pieces, which gives the operator an opportunity to react to any perceived dangers for the crushers. It promises to increase the safety of the equipment and reliability of oil sands operations, and significantly reduce the downtime of the equipment and cost of ore preparation.
