Our research team at the University of Alberta has extensive research experience in building engineering, indoor air science, energy systems, life cycle assessment, and renewable source development. Previously we have successfully completed several projects from nanoscale building material to complex building systems. In order to continue our outstanding contributions and enhance our national research capacity, we are requesting funds to purchase an Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) gas monitor that will be integrated into our comprehensive duct system to develop advanced low energy components and systems in buildings and quantify greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction by using these strategies. In this research program, we intend to develop a fundamental knowledge of various air conditioning processes. This fundamental knowledge will then be applied to Canadian technologies and industries to maximize building recirculation, protect occupant health, develop green buildings, and ultimately reduce our environmental footprint. For this reason, we eagerly need an FT-IR to augment our significant expertise in green building development. Utilizing this equipment, we will be able to conduct three NSERC-sponsored research programs: (1) photocatalysis air purification development; (2) low-energy building ventilation system development; (3) quantification of GHG emission reductions from buildings. With the aid of the requested FT-IR, our NSERC-funded research will make possible development of advanced air handling units, air filters, and HVAC systems, driving the growth and diversification of the Canadian economy through innovation. In the long-term, the procurement of the requested equipment will help Canada establish itself as a leader in healthy and green buildings.
