Our diverse cross-institutional team has extensive research experience in indoor air science, air cleaning technology development, and aerosol science. In order to continue our outstanding work and enhance our national research capacity, we are requesting funds to purchase a submicron particle characterization system (SPCS). The SPCS will be integrated into our comprehensive physical, chemical, biological, and particle analysis system for air characterization. This research program intends to understand aerosolization mechanisms, possible aerosol/bioaerosol transmission paths, and health effects of air cleaners and filters. Canadian governments and industries will then apply this fundamental knowledge to protect occupant health and the environment. For this reason, we eagerly need an SPCS to augment our significant expertise in air science. Utilizing this equipment, we will be able to conduct NSERC-sponsored research programs and expand the following research outcomes: (1) indoor air quality measurements and ventilation strategy development; (2) virus distribution in aerosol particles; (3) air cleaning and disinfection technology development. With the aid of the requested SPCS, our research will guide the public in selecting and using air cleaners/filters for pandemic and smoke events and assist with developing policies and regulations on public health.
