Ocean Biogeochemistry

Microorganisms form the base of marine food webs, determine current and future patterns of ocean productivity, and both respond to and influence global biogeochemical cycles. To understand the role of microorganisms in changing biogeochemical cycles, the Chairs research program will utilize traditional and cutting edge biogeochemical approaches, including nutrient analyses, optical sensors, stable isotopes, and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. Coupling these tools with both manipulative studies and large-scale field sampling programs, the Chair will quantify how changes in the physiochemical environment influence the concentration, composition, and biological cycling of marine inorganic and organic macronutrients.
