The underlying mechanisms involved in movement control and musculoskeletal function are complex and remain an active area of study. The Biomechanics of Balance and Movement (BBAM) lab at the University of Saskatchewan is a specialized research space that supports a range of interdisciplinary research programs exploring the intricacies of human movement, motor control, and musculoskeletal function. It houses a suite of tools that allows sophisticated measurements to characterize human biomechanics and motor control. The BBAM lab is co-directed by Drs. Lanovaz and Oates, experts in experimental motion capture and analysis for gait and other movement applications, with over 40 years combined experience in the field. ******The core research technology in the BBAM lab is the 3D motion capture system. This system uses specialized cameras that track reflective markers placed on the body and allows researchers to accurately record details of human movement during just about any task. The current BBAM lab motion capture system is now nearing the end of its life cycle and needs to be replaced and upgraded.******The 3D motion capture system is essential for the innovative research programs supported by the BBAM lab. Dr. Lanovaz's NSERC-funded research uses experimental motion data, combined with information about reaction forces and muscle activity, to develop computer models of the musculoskeletal system. These models provide important estimates of muscle and joint forces during movement that cannot be measured directly. Dr. Oates uses experimental information about full body movement and muscle activity during standing and walking to investigate how various sensory systems in the human body work together to support balance control and to develop novel tools that may improve balance. ******The 3D motion capture system is an essential state-of-the-art tool for studying complex human movement and vital for training skilled personnel. It will support the development of new knowledge through the innovative research of Drs. Lanovaz and Oates. This equipment also permits research by a number of other NSERC-funded researchers from different areas of specialty including Engineering and Medicine. The new, upgraded 3D motion capture system will sustain the BBAM lab's exemplary record of training students and preparing them for future employment in academia or industry. This equipment is absolutely necessary to allow the BBAM lab to seamlessly continue its momentum and advance all of its important research endeavors.*****
