My research focuses on the biochemical mechanisms that allow animals to endure severe environmental challenges. Survival often involves entry into torpor or dormant states and our studies of hibernation, natural freeze tolerance, dehydration resistance, and survival without oxygen discover the underlying principles of stress resistance and hypometabolism across the animal kingdom. My research identifies the molecular regulatory mechanisms that suppress metabolic functions, the signaling systems that coordinate cellular responses, and the changes in gene expression that produce stabilizing, defensive or regulatory proteins that support long term life extension. The research has multiple applications for organ preservation technology in transplant medicine.
