Dynamical systems is the area of mathematics which models the temporal and spatial evolution of physical systems. It has a broad range of applications throughout the sciences, social sciences and information technology. Operator algebras began as the mathematical models for quantum mechanical systems, but in recent years have developed deep connections with other areas of mathematics such as number theory, geometry and dynamical systems. Dr. Putnam's research focuses on the interaction between these areas: how dynamical systems provides new structures in operator algebras and how the tools of operator algebras can provide profound new insights into dynamical systems.
