The program seeks discovery of heterogenous catalytic science to address challenges in sustainable synthesis and environmental science. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the program explores new catalytic chemistry by designing atomically precise nanostructured catalytic centers and creating reaction environments that direct the reaction pathways to enable selectively chemical transformation of alternative feedstocks such as shale oil, lignocellulosic biomass, and organic waste into liquid fuels and commodity chemicals. This work generates the essential knowledge required for bridging first-principle understanding to industrial processes for atomic and energy efficient syntheses of sustainable fuels and chemicals.
