Build systems orchestrate the execution of commands that breathe life into a software system. While build systems play a key role, they also require maintenance, which is a nuisance for developers who must context switch from work on other artifacts. At best, neglected build maintenance leads to build breakage, requiring immediate developer attention, and at worst, it introduces defects due to improperly assembled releases.The goal of this research is to develop the concepts, techniques, and tools that are required to automate the maintenance of build systems. These self-maintaining build systems will reduce costly context switches and simplify software development.
