This research will support the emerging spectrum of environmental issues throughout cold regions, more specifically, lake ice as a sentinel of climate change. It will study the response of Northern large lakes and incorporate satellite observations of surface and subsurface processes in mesoscale numerical models. The research program will focus on the following themes: 1) understanding past, present, and projection of Northern lake ice phenology and thickness, 2) investigating the interplay between ice condition variability and lake water attributes 3) characterization and projection of lake ice subsurface-surface-atmosphere interaction and exchange processes in a changing climate using advanced remote sensing techniques.
