Electrocatalysis for Renewable Energy Production and Conversion

Electrochemical methods hold promise as a green route in fuels and feedstocks production and CO2 mitigation. However, current systems suffer from low energy conversion efficiency mainly due to a high applied potential -impeding their commercialization. In this program, an efficient electrochemical system will be developed which, for the first time, combines CO2 reduction with biomass-wastes oxidation to lower the applied potential and improve the energy efficiency at an industrially relevant high current density. This program integrates computational and spectroscopic methods with materials synthesis and engineering to advance in key performance metrics and bring renewable energy production and conversion closer to commercial viability.
