In the context of climate change mitigation carbon storage has become a most sought-after ecosystem service. Tropical forests currently store ~40% of terrestrial carbon while their deforestation accounts for some 10% of total greenhouse gas emission. The conservation of tropical forests therefore lies at the center of global sustainability. The Chair focuses on carbon sequestration as forests re-grow, on trade-offs and synergies between tree carbon and diversity and on the adoption of sustainability indicators. Because sustainability of forests is intimately linked with the growth of other economic sectors the results will provide sound scientific knowledge to inform policy.
