Tropical forests store ~40% of terrestrial hence Dr Potvin proposes to further the understanding of the role of tropical forests in climate change mitigation. Dr Potvin¿s first objective focusses on the role of Indigenous tenure in maintaining forest intactness and landscape resilience across Latin America. She will establish an Old Growth Forests Observatory with permanent monitoring of forest, landscape-level analyses with satellite imagery. She will also document functional traits of dominant species testing whether or not changes in climate are affecting seedling regeneration. Shifting her attention to Québec, Dr Potvin proposes to identify viable strategies to increase land-based carbon stocks.
