Surface water is a key part of the Canadian arctic landscape, with vast numbers of lakes and streams. This surface water is facing serious threats due to both climate change and resource development. Over the last few decades the Canadian arctic has been warming at nearly twice the global average, with serious consequences to our fresh water resources. This Canada Research Chair program will consider the effects of changes in climate, boreal forest and tundra vegetation, and permafrost on streamflow and lake levels. In addition it will contribute to the science needed to develop modelling tools to predict streamflow and lake levels.
