In the growing need for mineral resources for a Green Economy, the deep sea is emerging as the next frontier for mining. However, our knowledge of the resource potential of the ocean floor remains limited. The objective of the proposed research program is to understand the geological controls on the formation of deep sea mineral deposits, including their size, composition, and distribution. Expeditions on research vessels will include sampling and imaging of the seafloor using remotely operated vehicles, and testing of new technology for marine mapping and exploration with autonomous underwater vehicles.
