Responsible management of water resources is nowadays a major environmental challenge worldwide. Long-term satisfactory performance of mine water treatment processes and safe management of generated sludge represent a priority for governments and mining industry. The proposed research program, a continuation of the work started in the first term, focuses on optimization of passive treatment of mine drainage for the rehabilitation of closed and abandoned mine sites, and of active treatment of classical and new contaminants of emerging concern for operating mines. The findings are expected to improve the design and efficiency of treatment systems for contaminated mine waters.
