Our cells, eukaryotic cells, are divided into compartments: bacterial cells arent. This organizational difference influences how cells work, allowing eukaryotes to grow into the vast biodiversity observed today. Scientists know a great deal about how this organization operates today: we know a lot less about how it arose. Particularly mysterious are the membrane-trafficking compartments, responsible for moving material into, out of and around the cell. The mandate of this CRC is to continue applying computational techniques and microbial genomics, looking back two billion years, to understand the fundamental biological mechanisms by which the membrane-trafficking compartments, and our cells overall, evolved.
