Cells are the functional units of life. A major goal of the life sciences is to understand whether cellular architecture and molecular organization follows any general organizing principles. The research program of the Canada Research Chair in Evolutionary Cell Biology will unify traditionally parallel and independent fields of research such as cell biology, systems biology, bioinformatics, molecular evolution and population genetics to identify these organizing principles. This unification will lead to better predictions on the outcome of mutations on cellular systems and thus help predict the effect of mutations in humans, design more powerful tools in biotechnology and elucidate how complex life forms emerge through evolution.
