Parasitic diseases pose a major threat to human and animal health resulting in significant morbidity and mortality, and negative economic impact on a global scale. The goal of the proposed research program is to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of how parasitic pathogens establish infection and cause disease. To achieve this goal, protein complexes that are central to parasite virulence and transmission will be structurally and functionally dissected using cutting edge biophysical techniques. The expected long term, outcome will be to design and develop novel diagnostics and therapeutics to control these devastating pathogens.
