The Chair in Multi-Hazard Risk Assessment at Western will develop an integrated multi-hazard disaster risk management methodology for natural catastrophes. The proposed program will address cascading hazards (earthquake-mainshock-tsunami-geohazard-aftershocks) by accounting for physical causes of the hazards and evaluating the effectiveness of financial risk transfer measures (multi-hazard insurance and catastrophe bonds) for mitigating impacts. Using case studies in Western Canada, Japan, Indonesia, and Mexico, the program will quantitatively investigate multi-hazard earthquake impact at regional scale and propose suitable solutions for managing catastrophic risks. This will result in enhanced disaster preparedness across Canada and around the world.
