Coastal waters are of enormous value for Canada, yet this value is being increasingly diminished by poor water quality. Innovative field experiments will be combined with computer modeling to generate new understanding of the movement and transformation of pollutants in coastal environments. The program will produce novel insights needed to tackle major contamination challenges including the contribution of groundwater discharge to degrading coastal water quality, and the contamination of fresh groundwater resources. Innovative regional-scale assessment tools will be developed to support management decisions and thus protect coastal water resources from further damage as coastal development intensifies and the climate changes.
