John Ruan's research program aims to answer some of the most fundamental questions in astrophysics: What happens when compact objects such as black holes and neutron stars collide? What is the origin of the heaviest elements in the Universe? How do supermassive black holes at the centres of galaxies grow? To answer these questions, Dr. Ruan will use world-class telescopes to observe (1) light from compact object mergers detected through gravitational waves, and (2) actively-growing supermassive black holes that appear to quickly fade away. These cutting-edge investigations will use multiple 'cosmic messengers', such as light and gravitational waves.
