Communications networks are being transformed in a trend where software plays a central role in the design, operations, and management of the network to deliver a multiplicity of new services and applications. The scale, diversity, and dynamicity of emerging applications call for a management system that is effective in delivering applications while dynamically adjusting to changes in demand and requirements. Policy-based management has the potential to provide the management in this new network environment. This research project addresses key research challenges to achieve this potential for policy-based management by developing dynamic policy definition and conflict detection and resolution, and by leveraging self-managing and machine learning technologies. The research will generate new designs for PBM that meet the requirements of service providers, such as our partner TELUS, but also meet the requirements of Internet of Things and smart city applications, which represent two areas of massive commercial opportunity. By conducting this research in Canada we will generate knowledge and prepare graduates that will benefit our partner TELUS in their future operations, as well as Canada in terms of IoT commercialization and deployment of smart city applications.
