People suffering from Parkinson start their treatment with oral medication. If this stops working, deep brain stimulation surgery is often possible. The results critically depend on the good positioning of an electrode inside a structure called the sub thalamic nucleus. We propose to use an optical fibre during surgery to help the neurosurgeon place the electrode est the exact position where the efficacy of the treatment is optimal. We will demonstrate this with our optical fibre probe that can identify tissue from within the electrode used in the surgery.
