This proposal builds up on two previous $3M, 5-year NSERC CRDs which UBC has continuously hosted by UBC over the past 10 years focusing on mechanical pulping. In the previous phases of this program, our research emphasized energy reduction. In this round, our goals have expanded into a three-pronged program created in conjunction with our 10 industrial sponsors (AB Enzymes, Alberta Newsprint, BC Hydro, Canfor, Catalyst, FP Innovations, Holmen, Millar Western, Valmet, and West Fraser). Industry has set the vision of the program to better understand strategies to reduce energy reduction and to create higher-value markets for mechanical pulp. We are proposing a $3M, 5-year program that will train 8 PDF, 9 PhD students and 14 undergraduate students. We have created a research program with three research themes with eight projects in total, led by an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers, from five different departments, spanning three Canadian universities.
